Gore Doesn’t Fit the Costco Mold
Debra J. Saunders at the Weekly Standard reports on Gore’s latest attempt to get his face in front of a bunch of people: appear on the cover of Costco’s members magazine. Gore, the green guru that deplores American excesses and strives to push for a simpler, greener way of life, appears on the November issue of the big box store literature. What seems so incompatible here is the theme of Costco as it relates to Gore’s ideals. Costco, with its large warehouses, over-the-road shipping, large quantities of products and, gasp, those power-hungry big screen televisions and Gore with his, well, private jet, air-conditioned fleet of limousines and speaking engagements around the world. Well wait. Maybe they’re not so different after all. Costco pushes bulk and excess while Gore balks at personal excess, yet lives lavishly and spews carbon from his private jet.
